Susan Hiller
Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, Poland
30 October – 31 January
Lisson is pleased to announce that Susan Hiller’s work is the subject of Lost and Found, a major survey opening at Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw on 29 October. The first institutional survey of Hiller’s work in Poland, the exhibition spans five galleries and brings together five landmark bodies of work, tracing the artist’s five-decade engagement with language, memory, perception, belief and imagination.
The presentation opens with Hiller’s career-spanning investigation into anonymous British ‘Rough Seas’ postcards, from Addenda to Dedicated to the Unknown Artists (1976) to On the Edge (2015), before bringing together four major installations: Wild Talents (1997), a multichannel video originally commissioned by Warsaw’s Foksal Gallery; J. Street Project Index (2003), an extensive photographic record of German street signs bearing the prefix ‘Juden’; Lost and Found (2016), an audiovisual work drawing on recordings in extinct, endangered and revived languages; and Die Gedanken sind frei (2011), an interactive installation of 100 songs exploring themes of justice, resistance, displacement and freedom.
