Lisson is pleased to announce that Sir John Akomfrah is featured in the 2026 Wuhan Biennale, titled Temporary Ferry, which takes inspiration from Wuhan’s distinctive cultural identity and history as a major city of transit and exchange.

Bringing together more than 370 artists from 22 countries, the Biennale presents over 500 works and groups of works across Wuhan Art Museum’s two venues, Hankou and Qintai, as well as public spaces throughout the city. Led by chief curator Wu Hongliang, the exhibition explores themes of movement, encounter and cultural exchange, extending beyond the museum to engage with Wuhan’s urban landscape.

Positioning the city as an active site of artistic dialogue, Temporary Ferry reflects on the histories and connections that shape places and their communities, bringing international artistic perspectives into conversation with Wuhan’s cultural and social fabric.

The 2026 Wuhan Biennale is now open at Wuhan Art Museum, China, on view through 30 May 2027.
