Myth Migration
New York
4 November – 9 January
Inspired by Carmen Herrera’s shift in style following her move from Cuba to Paris in the late 1940s, this show includes an early, never-before-seen figurative work by her and centers on a wider group of 20th-century artists who moved to spend formative time within new communities of artists and writers from Mexico City and São Paulo to London and New York. This exhibition groups related works made during and in the decades after World War II, each charting a new geographic or stylistic horizon. Featuring artists such as Wifredo Lam, Leonora Carrington, Alice Rahon, Mira Schendel and Chen Kong-Fang, the show weaves in and out of movements such as Surrealism, Neo-Concretism and Existentialism, in order to trace the developments and influences that each adopted country had on the evolution of their artistic practices.
