Watch Now: Ha Chong-Hyun Panel Discussion at 27 Bell Street

During Frieze Art Fair week, Lisson presented a panel discussion in partnership with ArtReview, reflecting on the concurrent exhibition of Ha Chong-Hyun and six decades of his pioneering practice. The discussion featured Sook-Kyung Lee, Director of the Whitworth, University of Manchester, and Wenny Teo, Senior Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art at the Courtauld. The conversation was moderated by Mark Rappolt, Editor-in-Chief of ArtReview.

Based in Seoul, Ha Chong-Hyun has gained international recognition for challenging the conventions of painting through a sustained exploration of process, structure and material. From the early Naissance series of the late 1960s to his signature Conjunction paintings, made by pushing paint through the reverse of coarse hemp canvas, Ha has continually expanded the possibilities of the medium. His later Post Conjunction works extend this investigation through colour, scale and spatial rhythm. The panel considered the development of his practice and its place within the broader history of postwar abstraction.
