Cory Arcangel’s ‘Family Office’ at Stavanger Art Museum Marks His First Solo Exhibition in Norway

Opening on 14 November at Stavanger Art Museum, Family Office marks American artist Cory Arcangel’s first solo exhibition in Norway. Bringing together works spanning the past decade, during which Arcangel has been working in and from Stavanger, the exhibition offers an overview of his multidisciplinary practice, encompassing video, installation, performance and printmaking. Across these varied media, Arcangel examines the intersections of digital culture, technology, power and economic capital.

Known for hacking technological systems to expose the absurdities of contemporary media and the ways in which they shape our behaviour, Arcangel combines strategies of appropriation, reverse engineering and recontextualisation with a playful engagement with popular culture. The exhibition features new works alongside projects developed through collaborations with fashion designer Phoebe Philo and music producer Oneohtrix Point Never.

At its centre is a reconstruction of the Arcangel Surfware Flagship, the experimental store and art space the artist operated in Stavanger from 2018 to 2019. Acquired by Stavanger Art Museum in 2024, the installation reflects Arcangel’s ongoing exploration of the relationship between art, commerce and digital life. The exhibition also extends into the city through performative works, including Hail Mary (2022), a composition for carillon to be presented at Stavanger Cathedral.

Family Office is on view at Stavanger Art Museum from 14 November 2026 to 29 March 2027.
