Ha Chong-Hyun Panel and Discussion at 27 Bell Street

During Frieze Art Fair week, Lisson Gallery is pleased to present a panel discussion organised in partnership with ArtReview, reflecting on the concurrent exhibition of Ha Chong-Hyun and his six decades of pioneering work.

Based in Seoul, Ha has gained international recognition for challenging the conventions of painting through a sustained exploration of process, structure and material. From the early Naissance series of the late 1960s to the Conjunction paintings that established his signature method of pushing paint through the reverse of coarse hemp canvas, Ha’s practice has continually expanded the possibilities of the medium. His later Post Conjunction works extend this inquiry through colour, scale and spatial rhythm.

The discussion will consider the development of Ha’s practice and its place within the broader history of postwar abstraction. Speakers include Sook-Kyung Lee, Director of the Whitworth, University of Manchester, and Wenny Teo, Senior Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art at the Courtauld. The conversation will be moderated by Mark Rappolt, Editor-in-Chief of ArtReview.
