Josh Kline in Conversation at Dia Beacon

On Saturday 17 October, Josh Kline will join Liv Cuniberti, curatorial assistant, and Stephen Kwok, curator of public engagement, at Dia Beacon for a conversation around Tehching Hsieh’s One Year Performance 1978–1979 (Cage Piece) (1978–79). The event marks the first of The Waterline Sessions, a programme accompanying Dia’s long-term exhibition Tehching Hsieh: Lifeworks 1978–1999.

Hsieh’s Cage Piece, in which the artist spent one year confined to a cage without speaking, reading, writing or receiving visitors, places duration, endurance and constraint at the centre of artistic practice. Reflecting on Hsieh’s radical use of time, the conversation will consider what it means to spend – or waste – time under contemporary conditions of labour and artistic production. These questions resonate deeply with Kline’s own practice, which explores the structures of work and technology and their influence on contemporary life and experience.
