Lisson Artists at Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art, China

30 August – 8 November

Lisson artists are participating in a series of inaugural exhibitions at the Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art, which opened to the public in summer 2026.

‘Gèn: A Journey Through Art’s Transcendence’ explores time and space through the Eastern philosophical concept of ‘Gèn’ – life between heaven and earth. Yu Hong presents two golden canvases, Eva and Jingwei (both 2022), in which she examines the representation of female figures in Chinese and Western mythology. Inspired by Yunnan’s Naxi culture, Appearance of Crosses 2025-B1 (2025) by Ding Yi features tiny crosses applied in various colours form mosaic-like compositions that oscillate between microcosmic and macrocosmic resonance.

‘CODES & CANOPIES: Art Beyond the Age of Algorithms’ focuses on how artistic practices respond to the age of algorithms, data and technology. The Weight of Insomnia (2015–2017) by Liu Xiaodong examines how reality is recorded, translated and perceived in the digital life. Otobong Nkanga’s tapestry Altered Life (2024) features forms that resemble landscapes, mineral veins and living organisms, turning textile into a material field that carries geography, extraction and bodily memory. In Ryan Waiting (2024), Ryan Gander constructs an AI-driven digital double of himself that will remain online for one hundred years, questioning the existence of the artist once personality, behaviour and presence are translated into systematic logic.
