Lee Ufan: ‘Fragments of Infinity’ marks artist’s first major exhibition in Portugal

Lee Ufan’s Fragments of Infinity opens at Casa e Parque de Serralves in Porto on 16 October, marking the artist’s first major exhibition in Portugal. Bringing together paintings and sculptures across the villa and surrounding park, the exhibition considers Lee’s longstanding exploration of material, space and perception.

The presentation places Lee’s work in dialogue with the architecture and landscape of Serralves. Three sculptures are installed throughout the park, positioning stone and steel within the surrounding landscape, while six paintings, including a site-specific work, and three sculptures are presented inside the villa. Together, the works explore relationships between mark and surface, object and environment, and presence and absence.

Emerging through Lee’s involvement with the avant-garde Mono-ha movement in late 1960s Japan, dialogue between materials, space and gesture has remained central to his practice. Challenging conventional ideas of artistic intervention, Lee foregrounds the relationships between materials and their surroundings, exploring the tension between the occupied and empty, the painted and unpainted, and presence and absence.

On view from 16 October 2026 to March 2027 at Casa e Parque de Serralves, Porto.
