‘Huguette Caland: A Life in a Few Lines’ at the Hammer Museum

Lisson Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of ‘Huguette Caland: A Life in a Few Lines’ at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Bringing together approximately 150 drawings, paintings, sculptures and textiles alongside archival materials and ephemera, the exhibition offers an expansive view of Caland’s practice, exploring her enduring engagement with community, communication and the idea of home, as well as her defiance of social and sexual norms.

Lebanese by birth, Caland (1931–2019) lived and worked in the US, developing a distinctive oeuvre across media. Sensual and vibrant, her work explores humour, language, gender, aging and physicality, reflecting an artistic practice rooted in personal experience and a playful approach to the boundaries of representation. Caland spent her final decades in Venice, California, where she engaged with the artistic community while continuing to develop her work.

‘Huguette Caland: A Life in a Few Lines’ is organised by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, in collaboration with Deichtorhallen, Hamburg, and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. The exhibition is curated by Hannah Feldman, independent curator, with additional curatorial consultation by Aram Moshayedi for the Hammer presentation.
