Richard Long Presents 'ROCKS RIVER' at The Chinati Foundation in Texas

Richard Long’s ROCKS RIVER opens at The Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, on 9 October 2026, marking the first exhibition of new work by the artist in the foundation’s 40-year history. Presented during the 39th Chinati Weekend, the exhibition continues Long’s longstanding engagement with walking, landscape and elemental materials including stone, mud and water.

Since the 1960s, Long has expanded the language of sculpture through works shaped by walking, photography, text and arrangements of natural materials. At Chinati, ROCKS RIVER develops this approach through Long’s ongoing exploration of universal forms including lines and circles. The exhibition also builds on the artist’s existing presence at the foundation, where Donald Judd installed Sea Lava Circles (1988), composed of Icelandic lava stones arranged in three concentric circles.

ROCKS RIVER is on view from 9 October 2026 through June 2027, with related public programmes taking place throughout late 2026 and 2027. Further details will become available in the coming months.
